All the actors from the previous two films back role in this movie, except for the role given to Dumbledore Michael Gambon to replace Richard Harris who had died. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, the film is darker than the previous two Harry Potter films.

After furious with Aunt Marge and inadvertently causing him to magically inflate, Harry Potter escape from the Dursleys. Harry took the Knight Bus to The Leaky Cauldron, where he meets Cornelius Fudge, Minister of Magic. Fudge informs Harry that Aunt Marge had been deflated, and that he would not be punished. The Ministry of Magic is only concerned about the safety of Harry since fleeing mass murderer Sirius Black from Azkaban prison magic. Black is a good friend of the family and carers Harry Potter, but betrayed the family to the evil Lord Voldemort. Voldemort killed Harry's parents, but, when he tried to kill Harry, mysteriously disappeared. After that, Black killed their friend Peter Pettigrew along with 12 observers Muggle.

Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and find security has been tightened since Black escape. The reason now guarded by Dementors, dark, sinister beings that drain the happiness of the people closest to and guard Azkaban prison. They also cause fainting Harry. Remus Lupin, the new teacher of Defense Against the Dark Arts tells Harry he is more vulnerable to the Dementors because he has seen genuine horrors in his past. Lupin agrees to teach Harry the Patronus Charm, a shield against the Dementors.

Harry distressed to learn he would not be allowed to visit Hogsmeade, the local village most students are allowed to visit at the weekend. He was also angry with Draco Malfoy to destroy Hagrid's first lesson as Care of Magical Creatures teacher. Malfoy deliberately let himself be attacked by Buckbeak, Hagrid's pet Hippogriff, and his father ensures that Buckbeak sentenced to be executed by the end of the school year. Throughout the year, Hermione uses the Time-Turner to travel in time and attend classes held at the same time. Black managed to get into Hogwarts twice, but can not reach Harry. Fred and George Weasley show a secret path to Hogsmeade and give him the Marauder's Map to Harry.

During a visit to the village of Hogsmeade, Harry nearly caught when Ron found out that Scabbers, Ron's rat, has disappeared. Ron was sure he had been eaten by Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, which led to a dispute between him and Hermione. Hermione then find Scabbers in Hagrid's hut when the three of them visited him before Buckbeak's execution. On their way back from the cottage, Ron suddenly attacked by a large black dog and dragged into the hallway under the magic tree, the Whomping Willow.

Harry and Hermione follow them and find themselves in a year, rising above the hut known as the Shrieking Shack. They also found that the dog is Sirius Black's animagus. Harry tries to attack Black when Lupin arrives. Hermione confronts Lupin about habits she has observed during a class with him and admits Lupin into a werewolf. Lupin explains that he, Black, Pettigrew, and James Potter, Harry's father, was a good friend and refer to themselves as the "Marauders". To make the transformation more fun Lupin, his friends all became Animagi, humans who can turn into animals. The Marauders remained friends after growing up, and when they were chasing Potter against Voldemort, Black became their Secret-Keeper. However, Black then reveals that he secretly switch tasks with Pettigrew to serve as bait. Black realized Pettigrew was a traitor and, rather than be killed by Black, Pettigrew became Scabbers.

Lupin and Sirius are trying to express themselves Pettigrew and Pettigrew changed from Scabbers and back to human form. He acknowledged that he betrayed Harry's parents, but Harry Black and Lupin stop attacking. Instead, Harry persuades them to take Pettigrew back to Hogwarts castle to clear the name Sirius. However, when they are, and they returned to the castle, the full moon appeared and Lupin transformed into a werewolf. Pettigrew escapes while the dementors come and attack Harry and Sirius. They survived at the last minute by the Patronus that Harry believed it was done by his father.

Harry woke up in a castle and knowing that Black had been arrested. To rescue her, Harry and Hermione use a Time-Turner (Reverse Time) to travel back to the past and to prevent his arrest. Harry and Hermione rescue Buckbeak and re-view the night scene, until they see the Dementors attack Harry and Sirius. Harry is determined to see who sent the Patronus, only to realize that it is her own. Harry save Sirius and Buckbeak escape. Lupin, who is known as a werewolf, resigned. Harry worried that Pettigrew may help Voldemort to return, but Dumbledore says Harry may be grateful that he has helped save lives Pettigrew.

The difference in the film with a book :
  • The background story of Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs are not explained, though several times alluded to in the film. James Potter had not mentioned that he is actually animagus.
  • In the film does not explain why Snape hates Sirius and Lupin.
  • In the book pointed out that Sirius is "secret keeper" Potter family that he was the only one who can tell Voldervort where they live. This is why the people believe that he is guilty. At the last moment, then it was revealed that he gave the task to Pettigrew, and only he and Potter family who knew about this. In the movie only mentioned that Black is one person who knows where the Potter family lived.
  • In the film does not explain how Sirius can escape from Azkaban, and how he knew where Pettigrew was. In the book explained that he saw the picture Pettigrew (in mice) in the Daily Prophet.
  • Oliver Wood and Cho Cang is not in the film.
  • In the book, seeker Huffelpuff was Cedric Diggory. In the film does not explain the name Huffelpuff seeker, and actors act it was not the actor who played Cedric Diggory in the next film.
  • Quidditch matches Inter-Dormitory removed (although in this series for the first time Harry won the Quidditch Cup for Gryffindor). Only one Quidditch match is shown. And the part where Malfoy and his gang pretend to be a dementor is also eliminated.
  • All of Professor Trelawney's prophecy eliminated, except for Harry's death and the return of Voldemort.
  • In the book, Hermione had a little 'mental disorder' because the tight schedule of lessons and as a result of the Time-Turner instrument.
  • In the film does not show how Hermione bought Crookshanks. Harry first met Ron and Hermione middle of a fight at the Leaky Cauldron and Crookshanks already there.
  • Sir Cadogan was cut from the film, even though he can be seen in the 'scene dumped' on the DVD version.
  • Episode when Sirius disappeared into Gryffindor, although subsequent events that occur in the 'scene dumped' on DVD.
  • Buckbeak actually appeared several times during the trial, but in this film is told only once. And also not explained how Hermione help Hagrid to prepare for the hearing.
  • Transfiguration class McGonagall and Snape's Potions class does not appear in this film. What is shown is a class that taught new teachers: Divination by Professor Trelawney, Hagrid's Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Lupin.
  • Harry at the Leaky Cauldron mirror can not "talk"
  • In the book, illustrated dementors dementors kiss touching the mouth of the victim, in the movie, kiss the soul sucking Dementors described the victim without any physical contact.
  • In the book, Harry's Patronus (in the form of deer) running across the lake to repel the dementors, while in the film, Patronus is generating power to drive the dementor them. And also, Harry (who returned to the Time-Turner) was not patting Patronus.
  • In the film, the presence of dementors indicated by the sudden coldness; simply described in the book that came with the cold dementor.
  • Harry caught by Snape when he tried to find Peter Pettigrew. In this book only after a second visit to Hogsmeade.
  • In the book, Harry caught Malfoy when wearing an invisibility cloak.
  • In the book, the pitcher of milk in the cottage Hagrid broke because dropped, while in the film, the pitcher is shattered by stones thrown Hermione-of-the Time-Turner.
  • Harry and Lupin mengehatui that Peter Pettigrew was still alive when Harry saw her name on the Marauder's Map, instead of when in the Shrieking Shack.
  • "Moony" is written as "Mooney" which refers to one of Karl Mooney movie visual effects supervisor. But in the DVD subtitle still spelled as "Moony" as in the book.
  • Romantic atmosphere between Ron and Hermione is more emphasized than in the book. JK Rowling approved the suppression of Ron and Hermione's relationship. One example is when they hear the ax fall, after leaving Hagrid, Hermione burst into tears and hugged Ron.
  • In the Care of Magical Creatures lesson, in the book there is a flock of hippogriff, but in the movie there is only one: Buckbeak.
  • In the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, Boggart displayed different in the book. For example, Ron's face bogart spidery, in the movie he made of spider wearing roller skates while in books, spider legs cut off. Boggart Parvati is a snake in the movie, while in the book boggartnya was mummified. In the book, Lupin face the boggart before Harry's face boggart. And in the film, it seems clear that the boggart Lupin shaped moon. Whereas in the book only described as silvery ball, which raises the question of the disciples, why Lupin afraid crystal ball.
  • Snape (who was about to give the potion to Lupin) Lupin was heading Willow find Perksa. Snape uses an invisibility cloak to follow Lupin, but Snape did not look at the film Invisibility Cloak.
  • At the Quidditch match where Harry falls from the broom, he saw a cloud shaped dogs, in the book, he saw Sirius (in dog form) in the audience.
  • In the Shrieking Shack, Harry just attacking and disabling Snape, rather than together with Ron and Hermione. It is certainly strange that demonstrate different effects of the spell Expelliarmus (which should only disarm the opponent). Besides, Snape is Legillimens great (although we did not know it was in the series-5), he should be able to break the attack which only made Harry alone. In the book, because there was a spell of Harry, Ron and Hermione Snape unconscious.
  • Ron sentences in the book "If you want to kill Harry, you'll have to kill us too" spoken by Hermione in the film.
  • In the film, when Lupin teaches Harry about the Patronus Charm, happy memories that made Harry successful is 'just talk' with his parents; memories in the book is when Hagrid says that he will leave the Dursleys and go to Hogwarts.
  • In the book, Harry spent 2 weeks in London and bought all of his own book, except the book "Monster About Monster" that he got as a birthday present from Hagrid. In the film, Cornelius Fudge has provided all his needs on a night when he ran from the residence of the Dursleys.
  • In the book, Arthur Weasley was not told about Sirius Black to Harry. Harry heard her by accident.
  • In the book, when Harry caught by Snape with the Marauder's Map, Lupin invoked using the fireplace (floo powder network).
  • The scene at the Three Broomsticks when Harry knew that Sirius is his godfather, portrayed differently. In the book, Harry, Ron and Hermione in the Three Broomsticks and heard the conversation. And then Ron and Hermione just stared at Harry, a loss for words. In the film, Harry uses his invisibility cloak, while Ron and Hermione are outside, and the conversation took place in a room at the Three Broomsticks pribadai.
  • In the film, Harry threw snowballs toward Malfoy when they are near the Shrieking Shack, in the book, this scene occurs in the spring, Hermione is not with them, and Harry is thrown in the mud.
  • In the film, when Lupin transforms into a werewolf, Snape took a position to protect Harry, Ron and Hermione, putting himself in danger, which is not logical given Snape's hatred towards them.
  • The film portrays werewolf American version (up to 2 feet, large), while in the book, Lupin is just like regular wolves (werewolves and wolves are nearly identical).
  • In the book, when Sirius was caught at the end of the story, he is locked in Professor Flitwick's office, while in the film, Sirius is locked in a tower.
  • At the end of the book, Ron received a Pig, owl, from Sirius. He did not receive at the end of the film Pig and Pig did not appear in the movie to-4.
  • In the book, Harry receives a Firebolt for Christmas, where Hermione thinks the broom is already dijampi-spell and complain to McGonagall. As a result, Harry could not directly use the broom, and she and Ron are very angry at Hermione, cause they did not speak for some time. It was not until near the end of Sirius in his letter said that he that sent the Firebolt at the time. In the film, Firebolt only appear at the end, sent along with Buckbeak's feathers that give clues to Harry who sent it.
  • In the book, Hermioni slapped Malfoy, Hermione punched Malfoy in the film.
  • In the book, gentlemen Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs Marauder's Map has a different answer to Snape when he tried to investigate the map. In the film, their answers collectively, only one.
  • In the books, Hermione and Ron Harry did not carry through time because he was not aware of the attack Pettigrew, but in the movie, they did not take him because of his broken leg, he was fully conscious.
  • In the book, Hermione just play the Time-Turner sebanya three times. In the film, the Time-Turner was spun countless times, though Dumbledore tells Hermione that three rounds enough.
