Original versions in English are published by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, Scholastic Press in the United States, Allen & Unwin in Australia, and Raincoast Books in Canada. Indonesian version published by Scholastic Press.

There are many differences between the FILM with books, some of which are quite important, among other things :
- Peeves the mischievous ghost character, Professor Binns and Pansy Parkinson eliminated. A scene in which the actual displayed Peeves was filmed, but was not included in the film: according to gossip scene will appear in the version of the "director's cut".
- Harry did not know that Voldemort was the one who killed his parents until he bought his own wand. In the book, Hagrid had told this to Harry on his birthday.
- Harry did not return to Privet Drive after shopping in Diagon Alley. Although not shown clearly in the film, it seems Harry and Hagrid to spend time at the Leaky Cauldron (where they seem to be eating dinner and talking about the past Harry).
- Harry met Draco Malfoy was not until he arrived at Hogwarts.
- The part where Dursleys stay at Hotel Railview (to avoid the post owls) are removed.
- In the book, the man who gave Fluffy to Hagrid was the Greeks, while in the movie the giver was Irish.
- The part that tells the Christmas day, about dinner, the Weasleys, and all gifts to Harry, except for an invisibility cloak, cut to the film's release. But this section is included in the 'scene dumped' in the DVD version.
- In the book, pawns in the chess game of Magic always shouting suggestions to the players. Not so in the film.
- Harry, Ron and Hermione find Fluffy in a different way. In the book, they told tricked Malfoy (who invites Harry duel) to get out of the hostel at night - where they must elude Argus Filch, while in the movie they lost to the forbidden corridor because the stairs are always changing direction.
- In the book Harry saw many family members in the Mirror of Erised, in the film, he only saw his parents.
- Ron was the one who didetensi with Harry, Hermione, and Draco to go to the Forbidden Forest, instead of Neville (as in the book).
- Severus Snape and Quirrell protection against the Sorcerer's Stone (the giant Troll and puzzles herb) is removed, eliminating the role of Hermione.
- The scene of the birth of Norbert, Hagrid's dragon, in the film, but not shown when Norbert was taken into Rumanian. - Hermione Voldemort's name (after the Forbidden Forest scene). He should not mention the name of Voldemort's got a book or movie to-5.
- In the book, Aunt Petunia and Dudley blonde.
- The role of Neville Longbottom in the film is less than in the book. In the book, accompanied by Neville and Hermione on the train also saw Fluffy in the middle of the story. Neville was also involved in a fight with Malfoy in Quidditch matches. Subcerita of this book is Ron Neville advised to defend himself. However, the part where Neville tried to block Harry, Ron and Hermione remain in the film.

- Role as a commentator Lee Jordan Quidditch match is not too prominent, while Jordan's comments in the book is always interesting because many times interrupted by Professor McGonagall.
